Ellu Urundai is a crunchy, nutty traditional sweet of India. These sesame seed balls are so nutritious with just two healthy ingredients sesame seeds and jaggery, also a zero oil and zero sugar sweet recipe.Sesame seeds are roasted, mixed with caramelized jaggery and then made to burfis.Ellu Urundai is a part of our tradition to make them for festive seasons for Neivedhyam.
Nowadays children are getting so addicted to unhealthy ,junk foods with high sugar level and empty calories. These Sesame seed balls are prepared using jaggery which sweetens the food in a healthy manner and provides good amount of minerals. It is an easy and quite simple recipe that could be made in huge batches for a group of people.
You can use either black or white sesame seeds.Make sure you roast the sesame seeds in a pan for 5 mins in low flame to make them more crunchy in the burfi.Only thing to concentrate is the jaggery consisteny but once you learn the trick it is very easy to make at home and you won’t buy them from the stores. It is very important to shape them when it is hot.So you can dust your hands with rice flour instead of greasing them with ghee.Ghee gives a glossy look but rice flour reduces the heat and makes shaping easy.
Do make this healthy burfi at home and when you crave for some sugary stuffs, you can happily indulge in this sweet without any guilt.

INGREDIENTS :
1 cup sesame seeds
3/4 cup jaggery
1/2 tsp cardamom powder (optional)
1/3 cup water
Ghee or rice flour for shaping
METHOD
Measure the sesame seeds and jaggery.Heat a pan,dry roast the sesame seeds on medium flame (5 mins).Do not let them to smoke or burn.keep it aside and let it cool.
Crush the jaggery ,add water, cardamom powder and bring it to boil.Let the jaggery boil on medium flame, until the desired consistency is obtained.
Check the consistency by dropping a tsp of the jaggery syrup in a bowl of water. On cooling it should form a soft, non sticky ball. This is the perfect consistency to switch off the flame. Now add the roasted sesame seeds.
Give it a good stir to mix the sesame seeds with the jaggery evenly.
Grease your hands with ghee or dust with rice flour and start making small balls.(I have used ghee to get that glossy look for the pics).
Let it set for an hour.
Store the Ellu Urundai / Sesame balls in an air tight container at room temperature.
TAKE CARE TIPS
Use good quality jaggery ,do not use paggu vellam.
You can use a pinch of sukku powder for more flavour.
